MAKO FinCaps can now be found below ground in the new tunnel systems serving Heathrow Airport.
Tunnel work presents a different level of complexity. Access is restricted. Geometry is fixed. Elevation tolerance is absolute — especially when the finished slab serves as a roadway surface within a permanent transportation structure.
In this application, MAKO FinCaps were installed directly over rebar. The rebar was welded to the bottom structural section of the tunnel, creating a secure anchoring system for the screed supports.
The FinCaps then supported a screed rail set precisely to the finished elevation of the roadway.
Key placement conditions included:
-
Underground confined environment
-
Permanent structural tunnel base
-
Rebar welded to structural tunnel substrate
-
Screed rail set to final roadway elevation
-
No tolerance for elevation drift
Because the FinCaps provide mechanical elevation control over rebar, crews were able to establish a stable, repeatable screed reference line within the constrained tunnel environment.
In tunnel construction, rework is costly and disruptive. Once roadway slabs are placed in enclosed infrastructure, correction options are limited. The screed rail must hold line the first time.
MAKO FinCaps provided:
-
Stable rail support over welded rebar
-
Precise elevation alignment to finished roadway grade
-
Reliable performance in confined, structural conditions
From aerospace facilities to underground transit infrastructure, MAKO screed supports continue to perform in environments where structural precision is mandatory.
Above ground or below it — elevation control matters.
